Nothing Between the Fire and the Meat

You may not roast the Paschal offering on a spit of metal, because the metal heats and roasts the meat where it touches. They chose a spit of pomegranate wood so it would not weep sap into the flesh. Why does a book of law care what the stick is made of?

About This Talk

Korban Pesach 6 sorts out who is turned away from the first Pesach and pushed a month later to the second, and rules that impurity nobody on earth could have known about does not bar a man on foot, though it does bar a man who was riding. Chapter 7 turns to the nation and holds that individuals are postponed while a community is not, and that an offering slaughtered in purity is not eaten if the majority becomes impure before the blood is poured. Chapter 8 governs the eating, and insists that the flame itself act on the meat, with no pot, no water, no metal, and no oven emptied of its coals standing in between.
